For the purpose of the provisions contained in this chapter, the fire department shall consist of all persons duly and regularly appointed whose duty it is to extinguish fires in the city, or assist therewith, who are receiving compensation therefor from the city, under whatever designation they may be described in any salary or departmental ordinance providing compensation for members of said department, whether male or female.
